Things I found on a walk to a lecture yesterday. I'm liking circles a lot lately, there's something so sweet and simple about them.....
Materials: found buttons and metal pop top, linen cord.

More wire work. The spiral is a motif that shows up in my work from time to time. Alexander Calder made some lovely wire jewelry for his wife based on the spiral. That's one lucky lady.
Materials: steel wire, rayon ribbon

A little wire play this morning. I like how simple wire things can look like a line drawing made with one continuous, unbroken stroke.
Materials: steel wire, linen cord.

Rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, but paper beats rock. I remember pondering that one as a child. I've definitely felt the power of a blank page when commencing to write or draw....
Materials: paper, rayon rope, thread.

Yesterday it was rock, now it's scissors. Rock beats scissors.
Materials: scissors, linen cord, rayon ribbon.

My mom brought this rock back from England for me. Those are usually my favorite kind of gift to get from a trip abroad. A rock can say so many things about where it's from. I love the colors, there's another layer of the brick color on the reverse side.
Materials: found rock, rayon rope.

An old experiment in wood that I cut and carved. Not sure that I like it used this way, but this is how it hatched out this morning. I never plan any of these, I just let them unfold as they want to before I start thinking.....
Materials: hand carved wood, shantung silk, rayon ribbon, thread.

I've been reading up on Marie Antoinette after seeing the movie made with Norma Shearer and Tyrone Power. I can't remember who played Louis XVI but he was very good in it as well. Anyway, lots of ribbons and poufs and ruffles back in those days. I decided to recycle some scraps from another project in that vein.
Materials: recycled sari, thread.

This is made from Smokebush. I've never seen these in New York, so this was a fun discovery. It looks like a tree that Dr. Seuss would draw. It consists of these tall, elegantly arched limbs with large leaf clusters ending in a large smoky puff. It's quite a lovely tree, I love to watch it sway ever so gently in the breezes...
Materials: Smokebush, rayon ribbon

More wire and string, this time strung with some nice bugle beads. There was a whole box of these thrown out at my old job that I rescued. They're very pretty but can swallow copious amounts of time when you string them.
Materials: brass wire, silk thread, recovered glass bugle beads.

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Today I started out playing with wire and somehow got the string involved in this. I've been liking the idea of hard and soft materials together lately....
Materials: brass wire, acrylic cord

These are shards from an old mirror I drew on a few years back. I used an etching pen and a frosting agent to make the marks. Back then all the kids in New York were doing graffiti on subway windows with this frosting stuff, I always thought those translucent images were really beautiful with the changing lights in the tunnels....
Materials: mirror shards, rayon ribbon, soutache cord.

A blue period today. just worked with some scraps from the desk....
Materials: shantung silk scrap, wool fewlted balls, rayon ribbon, acrylic cord.

The long thin thing here was another mystery pod I found in the street underneath a sycamore tree. I haven't found the source of this pod or another like it so far. Originally it was a bright acid green color, but it's changed dramatically just sitting on my work table....
Materials: mystery pod, found feather, cinnabar bead, rayon ribbons.

This little bottle was found by my mom while digging in the garden. Looks like maybe it held perfume at the beginning of its life. There wasn't any other like item where this was found, so I don't think this was from a dumping ground, like so many old city houses have in the back. I'm hoping this is the remnant of a successful love spell made many years ago....
Materials: found bottle, glass beads, rosemary spines, thread, acrylic cord.

Friday, July 16, 2010

Had a nice quiet still moment sewing this all up this morning. Very peaceful.
Materials: found wire, rayon rope, acrylic cord, thread.

More from the journey to the center of my desk. I think these are springs from some kind of a cot. I must have found them back in the winter, a long time ago. I've used the chain they were on for this blog a while back, now it's time to use these guys.

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

I found this cheerful little plastic ball out walking with my niece a while ago. Just rediscovered it cleaning up around my desk. I tend to develop geological layers on my work surfaces, so things can go missing....
Materials: found plastic ball, glass beads, wire, rayon ribbon.

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

I don't know whether these are inspired by the comic book character or belonged to an actual spider because I just found them on the street. I like them though, there's something very eighties about black and red.
Materials: found sunglasses, heavy black cord.

Monday, July 12, 2010

My fort making skills once again pressed into service for this blog. I'm sure I've made something similar to this, but I had a very detailed dream about this configuration of stick and string, so I took that as my assignment for today.
Materials: sticks, rayon string.

Some beautiful hydrangea a dear friend brought over. They looked like they were getting over being in a vase and I wanted to document their utter loveliness, even in decay. All love all the stages of flowers, I've been known to keep some dire specimens around for ages, just to admire them as they are.
Materials: flowers, rayon ribbon.

More souvenirs from Independence Day. Folks sure like their fireworks in the south. A week later and you still hear a stray one or two fired off somewhere in the night. They are fun, but they do scare the neighborhood dogs something awful.
Materials: found firework sticks, linen cord, rayon ribbon.

Somebody lost a lot a lot pennies on Circle Street. Looks like they've been there for a long while too, on the verge of turning into something else entirely.
Materials: found pennies, rayon ribbon, glue.

An aromatherapy special for today. This is all lavender from my sister's garden. Smells very nice and calming.
Materials: lavender, acrylic cord, rayon ribbon.

An unexpected find in a shady grassy spot far from the road. Someone lost their blue and yellow orange, and barely used too.
Materials: found crayons, scrap string, acrylic cord.
