I'm fascinated with this chess piece kind of shape. I used to play with my dad's chess set endlessly which he frequently mistook for an interest in the actual game. I just liked the pieces just for themselves. The wood is some pine dowel I found on the street. Not the best material, but good for some practice anyway.
Materials: turned wood, handmade cotton/rayon rope.

I had a dream like experience finding this nail yesterday. You know when something happens and somehow you become aware that you are dreaming and it is significant somehow, so you try to make note of it. Makes a nice design element though, I'll say that.
Materials: found nail, acrylic cord.

I just can not help myself, more exquisite material right from my back yard. The paper ribbon is from something called fruit by the foot whatever that may be, found it dog walking anyway. I think I might try pressing this just to see if I can't give it a second act.
Materials:flowers from the yard, found fruit by the foot ribbon.

More spring flowers. I just love them so much this season, I can't let them go, so after they're no longer up to being arranged I've been drying them and saving their petals at least. They still smell so wonderful. There's a large cherry tree in bloom in my neighborhood almost completely covered in wisteria, we're talking a two or three story wall of flowers, just gorgeous and you can smell it from way down the street.
Materials: dried lilac, sycamore branch, rayon ribbon.

Spent a lovely afternoon visiting my friend Karen in Old Fort. She has the curious ability of being able to spot four leaf clovers from entire meadows full of them. Once I mentioned making a necklace with them, she had a handful gathered for me in no time at all. Now that's lucky.
Materials: four leaf clovers, silk thread.

The things you find in the street... I just picked up the traffic cop but minutes ago walking the dogs.
Materials:found plastic, glass beads, linen cord, rayon ribbon.

Saturday, April 24, 2010

Spring is a fragile thing. You have to enjoy it while it lasts. That's a starling egg. Not a good idea to build your nest in a dryer vent as you can see. Well, you live and you learn hopefully.
Materials:found egg, dried wisteria blooms, linen cord.

I'm learning how to turn wet wood and so far failing spectacularly at it. I'm getting closer though. This is the remains of a cup that I had a go at. Very pretty wood anyway, and I still put it to use.
Materials:mystery turned wood, found metal, handmade cotton/rayon rope, rayon ribbon.

Found on the morning walk, it's spring! It's a really rusty little spring... I always wonder where these random parts come from and how their former host is doing without them. My father once told me a story about his dad totally taking apart a pocket watch to see if he could successfully reassemble it. He did, showed my dad how he even got it working again and all, then my dad noticed a few parts lingering on the side and asked if they didn't belong to the watch he just put together... "Well, yes they do, but clearly you don't need them...."

I think this might be one of those CO2 cartridges you use to make seltzer water, I think I remember one of those spray bottles to do that with kicking around the house when I was a kid. One of those odd standard issue items for the kitchen in the 70's
Materials:found cartridge, acrylic cord, glass beads.

These little wire ties seem to reproduce themselves like rabbits on my kitchen counter. Maybe because I have some rabbit like eating habits....
Materials:recycled vegetable ties.

I volunteered for an event and found this champagne cork cleaning up. I love cork as a material. It's not only very pretty, it floats too!
Materials:found cork, handmade silk/cotton/rayon ribbon rope, acrylic cord.

Kid's stuff I've found....baby, butterfly, bunnies. The wisteria from yesterday is already fading but still very beautiful.
Materials: found plastic parts, rayon chenille yarn.

Saturday, April 17, 2010

Nature is and always will be the best designer. I wanted to do something with these beautiful flowers that are coming up all over. My sister very kindly donated some of her volunteer wisteria for this one. I couldn't work it too much as the petals were dropping off in showers. I know it won't last, but neither does spring.
Materials: wisteria, copper wire.

Friday, April 16, 2010

May not be the most comfortable thing I've ever made, or functional even, but I couldn't resist working with this beautiful branch that fell across my path. I revisited my childhood fort making skills to put it together. It's spring again...
Materials:beautiful found branch, rayon chenille yarn.

Thursday, April 15, 2010

So this what I found yesterday, and again, I have no idea what this is or what it does or what it is for. I only know that today it is a necklace because I made it so.
Materials: yet another mystery black rubber part, silk/cotton blend thread, rayon ribbon, copper wire.

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

I don't know where all these mystery black rubber items are coming from, or what the universe is trying to tell me with them. This one had a hole running through it already, so it's this perfect little square bead. I found yet another black rubbery on my way home today, so you'll probably see that tomorrow....
Materials: black rubber mystery item, handmade silk/cotton rope, rayon chenille yarn.

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Another street find. I have absolutely no idea what this is, but it is rubber and very bouncy.
Materials: mystery rubber object, copper ring, found metal hook, rayon chenille yarn.

Monday, April 12, 2010

I love washers. They're wonderful things in their own simplicity and this spring has brought me a fine little collection so far.
Materials: found metal and rubber washers, silk blend cord, rayon ribbon

Sunday, April 11, 2010

Wasn't sure what I was going to make this morning, then I found this little beauty in the street. I love the color of a deep rust.
Materials: found mystery motor, copper wire.

Saturday, April 10, 2010

96...97...98...99...100! This blog is 100 necklaces old today! I salvaged pieces from a shattered yet intact full length mirror I found in the woods for this one. Sounds like there's a fairy tale behind that story.....
Materials: recycled mirror, silk blend cord, rayon ribbon, plastic beads.

Friday, April 9, 2010

Well, this didn't turn out the way I imagined it, but I tried anyway. Maybe that's it for the toothpicks...
Materials: toothpicks, linen cord.

Thursday, April 8, 2010

More toothpicks. I like the effect of them though they're not exactly a luxury material. They are pretty though.
Materials: toothpicks, linen cord

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

I had a dream about using toothpicks to make a necklace, I was making these crosses that had bits of picks glued together like marquetry. That didn't quite happen this morning, but I did make one of my dreams come true in a way....
Materials: toothpicks, linen cord.

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

This little purple fella has been knocking around my desk for a long time now. Seems like a nice enough spring day to let him out.
Materials: found foam worm, fake leaves, linen cord.
